Drake - Take Care (Explicit) ft. Rihanna

Wow, totally didn’t expect this to be the music video.  Such great imagery.

My interpretation:

- The bull represents the male character.  The bull is also the astrological sign, Taurus, whose attributes are strength, fertility, and stability, which Drake’s character can provide.  The bull is also protective, as seen when the arrows fly by and the bull dodges them.  The bull could also represent the relationship itself, defining it as strong and able to push through the hard times.
- The snow, mountain landscape could represent desolateness and isolation, like the breaking of a relationship and being alone afterwards.  The mountains, with their peaks and valleys, also represent the ups and downs of the relationship.
- The slow motion camera shots, like the one of the bull, could represent taking the relationship slow, especially after so much drama.  When you’re ready, just say you’re ready, when all the baggage just ain’t as heavy, and the parties over just don’t forget me, we’ll change the pace and we’ll just go slow
- The cinematography of focusing in and out of the subjects in the video not only also relate to the ups and downs of the relationship, but also choose to focus on certain elements of the song and the subjects themselves.
- The blue jay represents Drake as Drake is from Toronto (MLB team Toronto Blue Jays).  The blue jay could also represent a bird’s vision, which have high visual acuity and judgement of depth, which can be interpreted as looking into someone’s soul or past.   You’ve seen all my mistakes, so look me in my eye
- When Rihanna and Drake hug during certain parts of the song, it’s intimate, but you can see the hesitation on Rihanna’s face as related to the lyrics during those scenes, most likely attributed to her hurt from past relationships and timidness about starting a new one.
- The fish is the Christian representation of faith, possibly attributing to the need of faith between the man and the woman for the relationship to work.  The fish could also represent the woman, as noted by the astrological symbol Pisces (a fish), which is attributed to the feminine.
- The dancer probably represents the night life and the past regrets they have because of it.  The almost tribal form of the dance could also represent the rawness of love and its ability to be both a positive and negative force.
- The body falling and the dirt coming off of it could represent a past failed relationship and the hurt that came with it.
- The burning of the forest also represents past failed relationships and the hurt that came with it, but on the flip side, a forest needs to burn in order to grow, so it could also represent a return to love, that of which Drake’s character offers.

Maybe I’m reading too much into the video and the song, but if you have any other ideas on anything else in the video, do let me know!

I’ve loved and I’ve lost.

From Wikipedia:

The music video was filmed in February 2012. It was directed by Yoann Lemoine. Drake said about the concept of the video: “It’s all basically the ups and downs of a relationship but represented in icebergs and fire and animals and just pulsating movement and then you’ve got me and Rihanna very intimate – kissing, hugging”.

The video was initially supposed to premiere on March 23, 2012 but was delayed due to it still being edited, Drake said about the delay: “It had to go through a process – I shot it with a director who’s incredible and we were just very specific about it. It’s a big record and a lot of footage. It’s very artistic very abstract video – something that I wasn’t used to. I’m usually used to a very straight forward concept so I’m really excited for people to see it because it’s actually just something beautiful to look at. There’s actually for once no story necessarily as far as there being a narrative like ‘What’s My Name?’ or ‘We Found Love’ where there’s stories. This is just beautiful imagery. We have it where it needs to be now……Rihanna has signed off on it and she loves it”. In a separate interview, Rihanna said: “I can’t wait to see what all my fans think, I saw it a couple of days a go, I love it. It’s beautiful, It’s different from anything Drake has ever done”.[11] Drake said that the video should be released either on March 28, 2012 or March 29, 2012. However, yet again, it did not premiere on any of those dates.[12] On April 1, 2012 Drake said on Twitter that the editing process is still ongoing; he also said that the video will premiere “this week” along with the video for “HYFR (Hell Ya Fucking Right)”.[13] On April 5, 2012, Drake announced that the video will be premiere on April 6, 2012 along with HYFR’s video. The video was finally premiered on April 6, 2012 at 7:56 PM EST on MTV, OVO, and wordonroad.net.[14]. It was uploaded to Drake’s official VEVO account on April 23, 2012.”
